Chiropractic can help those suffering from FIBROMYALGIA

Women are ten times more likely to suffer from Fibromyalgia than men.

WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain in the joints that is widespread throughout the body with no apparent cause or explanation. It was first described in medical literature over 150 years ago called fibrositis, myofascial pain syndrome and muscular rheumatism. In 1990 the American College of Rheumatology officially recognized the diagnosis for Fibromyalgia.

The symptoms include:

1. Stiffness (especially in the morning)

2. Fatigue

3. Trouble sleeping

4. Migraine  headaches

5. Irritable bowel syndrome

6. TMJ

7. Carpal tunnel syndrome

8. Intolerance to cold weather.

“Fibromyalgia diagnosis remains difficult because there are currently no diagnostic laboratory tests for fibromyalgia.”

At first it was thought that the symptoms of Fibromyalgia were caused by stress and worry, which caused additional muscle tension. People with Fibromyalgia do not show that stress itself causes Fibromyalgia as shown in recent studies. Anxiety and stress do make the condition much worse. What usually happens is the pain and fatigue of Fibromyalgia will cause stress and worry, which increases the pain and fatigue and therefore thus creates a vicious cycle.

The following criteria is how Fibromyalgia is diagnosed:

1) There is significant pain in each of the four quadrants of the body for at least 3 months.

2) There are 11 of 18 tender points for at least 3 months.

                               Drugs do not work

“The medications used to treat pain and inflammation for most rheumatic disorders is not of great help in Fibromyalgia. Aspirin and NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as Ibuprofen, do little to reduce pain. Even more powerful drugs such as corticosteroids do not seem to help the pain, stiffness, and fatigue of Fibromyalgia.”

Fibromyalgia is a very complicated condition that has more than one cause. Most all researchers agree that the primary cause is “the breakdown of the normal function of the central nervous system, which creates an abnormal perception of pain.”

“The cause of Fibromyalgia must involve one or more abnormalities by which the Central Nervous System interprets pain signals.”

A study was conducted that analyzed 17 total studies that compared treatments and outcomes of patients with chronic pain and, though treatments varied by practitioner, the patients clearly preferred chiropractic.

Dr. James Lee of Austin Chiropractic in Texas sees many patients recovery significantly from Fibromyalgia though Chiropractic treatments.

A very important study published in the American Journal of Medicine reported that in a group of Fibromyalgia patients, who had received Chiropractic care, the majority of them obtained improvement and over half obtained great improvement.

Chiropractic has the ability to improve cervical and lumbar range of motion and spinal flexibility, which therefore reduces pain levels.

Chiropractic has proven to be a safe and effective method of resolving neurological conditions such as Fibromyalgia and should be considered as a “first choice” by patients suffering with this condition
