Scoliosis in Children and how to detect it.

Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the thoracic spine accompanied by rotation of the vertebral bodies.

There are many types of spinal deformities possible in children, especially in the thoracic area of the spine. Scoliosis is the most popular. The main types of Scoliosis are postural and structural.

When looking at your child’s back, it should appear straight and not deviate to one side. However, when there are curves in a sideways direction it is known as scoliosis. This is more evident when viewed on an X-ray or an MRI.

Chiropractors are specialist in detection and correction of scoliosis

Doctors of Chiropractic are specialist in the detection and correction of scoliosis in children and adults.

Can anything be done to prevent scoliosis?

Yes. It is very important to monitor children’s postures when they are growing, with the most critical period being between 7 and 16 years of age during their growth spurts. Especially in today’s world with children carrying heavy backpacks to school and playing to many video games.  It is a good time to have them assessed to see if any abnormality is present and therefore can be controlled if detected early enough.

Our office on 1823 Fort View road, Austin, TX has free exams for children that might have scoliosis. Usually these exams are on most Saturdays and require an appointment. Or visit the San Antonio Chiropractic Office!
